But the trip was really very fun. Observations made as follows:-
Seen the Common flameback (female) on the tree with yellow flowers. This is the 1st time seeing the woodpecker! Had seen the photo of it a few times but this is the 1st time seeing with my eyes! :D According to Henrietta, this is the female coz the crown of the head is black, the males has the distinctive red crown.
Then there were 2 yellow-vented bulbul (1 juvenile and 1 adult i think) flying about in the bushes on the left hand side of the road, facing the walking directions.
Walking up the stairs, a pair of white-breasted waterhen were spotted foraging on the grass patch.
At 8.45am, a juvenile Javan Myna preening on the tree at the top of the stairs.
Then 3 pink-necked green pigeons (1 fat adult n 2 juveniles) were sitting on the grass patch and flew to the drain to forage. One of the pink-necked green pigeons flew to the Macarthur Palm to feed.
At 8.50am, a yellow-vented bulbul was spotted to bring nesting material to the topmost section of the lipstick palm. Most probably there is a nest there.
A dead carcass of a squirrel was seen under the stairs. The cat was sniffing when we reach, then it went into hiding in the secluded area at the top of the slope.
A collared kingfisher was spotted perching on the tree (probably the rain tree), let'splay spot the bird!

This marks the end of the arts survey part 1.Then we took bus back to science and started from the red stairscase behind the library. The science survey started at 9.15am.
At 9.20am
- Sulphur-crested cockatoo perching on the tree
- Blue-throated bee-eater (2) perching on same tree.
- Black-naped oriole jumping about and calling.
- 1 plantain squirrel seen
- Spotted dove perching on the roof of building.
At 9.30am
- 8 sulphur-crested cockatoo flying past and made a lot of noise.
At 9.35am
- 2 more plantain squirrels observed (1 chasing the other)
- Female flowerpecker on the tree (photo below)
- Sulphur-crested cockatoo and black-naped oriole perching on the neighbouring tree (same type)- 2 more cockatoo flew to that neighbouring tree
At 9.38am
- 4 sulphur-crested cockatoo flew off from the tree.
At 9.40am
- 3 Javan Mynas, 1 yellow-vented bulbul, 1 black-naped oriole perching on the bare tree (photo below) - there is a lot of activity in this area!
- Yellow-vented bulbul (not from the bare tree) pick on something from the leaves of the bushes to the right of the bare tree (photo below)
- Javan Mynas also pick something from the bush above- 1 Asian Glossy Starling also seen perching at the bush.
At 9.45am,
More birds flew to the bare tree (Counted 7 Javan Mynas and 1 Yellow-vented Bulbul)
- The dried-up Simpoh Air fruit seen (photo below)
At 9.55am,-White-throated Kingfisher (Thx Henrietta for the correct ID) - white chest, perching on branch (photo below)
- This kingfisher was chased off by one of the sulphur-crested cockatoo which was perching on the nearby tree with small leaflets. (photo below) Then the cockatoo took its place and perch for a few seconds then flew off.- About 2-3 cockatoos on the tree below
At 9.58am,- Sulphur-crested cockatoo carrying a oval-shaped fruit - like the size of sea almond fruit from tree (photo below and its flower) to neighbouring tree.
At 10am,- Sulphur-crested cockatoo eating something like a miniture starfruit. (size of sea almond) on tree (photo below)
- 3-4 sulphur-crested cockatoo perching on tree inside the Centre for Protective Technology. (photo below)
At 10.05am,- A pair of yellow-vented bulbul on the bare tree (photo below- circled on red) On the left hand side of the road, facing chinese library, behind the slope mitigation area.
- One of them picking on the tree branches.
- Simpoh Air fruits dried up, small.- Weird calls from area to the right hand side, in front of chinese library staircase(facing stairs) - I recorded the sound using handphone.
10.10am - reached Chinese library.
At 10.14am - reached research link.
On the tree with yellow flowers (a lot activities) (photo below)
- Olived-backed sunbird (female) flying at the top of the tree.
- Yellow-vented bulbuls (~3) jumping about the tree.
- Javan Mynas (~2) jumping about.
- Bird i'm not too sure of - looks like pied triller. [Bulbul-sized, white chest, seems like black wings with whitish patterns, black eye-stripe like yellow-vented bulbul]
At 10.23am,- Plantain squirrel spotted in the bush behind the trees.
- 5 yellow-vented bulbul on the neighbouring tree (also yellow flowers) [1 picking on branches, 2 pairs chasing one another]
At 10.30am
- Changeable lizard -Orange (very bright) head doing push-ups on the grass patch below the tree.
- Common tailorbird jumping about on the tree above the patch. (also yellow flowers)
- Another changeable lizard basking on the branch
At 10.35am,
- Yellow-vented bulbul picking on treelet, then flew to ground, go round the barrel, picking the ground then flew to neighbouring treelet.
- Another yellow-vented bulbul fluffing up the feathers (to let wind blow and sunning?) on the tree behind the treelet (also yellow flowers)At 10.38am,
A pair of myna foraging on the grass patch under the tree, before reaching the stairs.
At 10.40am,
- 1 yellow-vented bulbul feeding on Macarthur Palm
- White-throated Kingfisher (Thx Henrietta for the correct ID) perch on the tree (photo below)
- A pair of rock pigeons picking on the branch of the same tree
- Black-naped oriole perching on the rain-tree
This marks the end of the survey, ended at 10.45am.On my way back i saw two brahiminy kites flying above the private housing at clementi area, i saw them fr AYE, the setting sun reflects the light of the brown wings of the kite beautifully! Normally, without the bino, the brown wings couldn't been seen! What a lucky day today~
