Special Semakau Trip (28-29 May 2010)

Sunrise at Semakau! It is a super early survey, so we stayed overnight on the island. The 1st day I tried to learn to cycle but in vail, then the second day the survey started at 5am!
Pygmy squid (Idiosepius sp.) Squid can change colours to suit its surroundings!
Upside down jelly-fish (Cassiopea sp.) The jellyfish move in this way because they have symbiotic algae on their tentacles, the algae requires sunlight to make food, so the jellyfish move in the upside down manner to expose its tentacles to the sunlight. In return, the jellyfish get food from the algae.
Gobies still sleeping~ And a weird fish sticking out of the burrow!

Smooth spooner crab (Etisus laevimanus)
There were quite a number of flower crabs (Portunus pelagicus) in our zone, they are also swimming crabs as seen from the last pair of swimming legs.
A fish trapped in the tidal pool, we tried to help it out but it doesn't seems to like it, so it hide under the rock awaiting for high tide to free itself.
One of the biggest nudibranch (Dendrodoris tuberculosa) Was rather lucky to see one. The patterns looks like small roses on its back. It was the size of my palm. It is a nudibranch because it has naked gills. They feed on algae as seen below it.
Hairy sea hare (Bursatella leachii) They have 2 pairs of tentacles which looks like "rabbit's ears", thereby getting their common name, sea hare. They feed on algae.Spider conch (Lambis lambis). Look at the pair of eyes looking cuiously at us and its strong operculum. The spines on the shell and its operculum help the animal to overturn itself when it is overturned. It is well camouflaged when it is on the right side up (2nd pic below).
Red swimming crab (Thalamita spinimana) Swimming crabs have a pair of swimming legs (flattened) so that it can swim in the water and burrow into the sand. Look at the pretty blue legs and red body!!!
Pseudoceros sp. A tiny flatworm. They are called flatworm because they are really flat!!!
Bulb tentacles anemone (Entamacea quadricolor) Some tentacles have bubble tip tentacles.
Seems like a bleached Haddon's Carpet Anemone (Stichodactyla haddoni)! Anemone have symbotic relationship with algae; the anemone provides home for the algae in return for the food made by the algae for the anemone. The anemone is bleached when the algae leave the anemone probably due to stressful conditions.Scallop (Comptopallium radula) A bivalve that is commonly seen on the island. It can swim by opening and closing the shells, this particular one hit my legs while swimming, which is how I managed to find it. :D Soft coral seen at the end of the survey...
A huge fishing net was found in out survey area. It is illegal to cast a fishing net in Singapore waters, fishermen can only fish using rods not nets! So stop casting nets! Look at the consequences, 3 dead blacktip sharks (Carcharhinus limbatus) and many fishes caught in the net. This will really greatly disturb our biodiversity in our waters. Turtles is an endangered species that is caused by poachers who cast nets, So in order to let the future generations enjoy the rich biodiversity, we need to stop the doings of these poachers and protect our biodiversity, This is one of the reasons of Project Semakau, trying to get Pulau Semakau to be our first marine nature reserve, so that these poachers cannot fish in the area!
